Catskill Weaving School at Hudson House | Introduction to Weaving with Samantha Bittman
May 14, 10-5pm & May 15, 10-5pm
Class fee - $330 (includes materials fee)
In this two-day workshop, students will learn the basics of hand-weaving using a 4-harness floor loom. On the first day, participants will learn how to wind a warp and set up their own looms. The second day will cover how to weave, basic weave structures, and finishing the edges of your weaving. This class is designed for those without weaving experience as well as for those who are looking for a refresher. Class is limited to 4 participants.
Samantha Bittman is an artist and educator based in Woodstock, NY. In her practice, she works with hand-weaving to generate patterned painting supports, graphic wallpapers, and sculptural installations. She has taught courses in weaving for over ten years at various institutions such as Rhode Island School of Design, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Tyler School of Art, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Kent State University, and the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn. Her teaching focuses on a strong foundation of the workings of the loom, woven structure, and drafting notation, with the goal of supporting individual direction in design, art, and/or craft. She holds an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design, and has participated in residency programs at the Joseph and Anni Albers Foundation, Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, and Ox-Bow School of Art. In 2012, she received the Artadia Award. Recent solo exhibitions include, Ronchini, London, UK; Andrew Rafacz, Chicago, IL; Morgan Lehman, NY, NY; and Greenpoint Terminal Gallery, Brooklyn, NY. She has been included in numerous group exhibitions including David Castillo, Miami, FL; Shane Campbell, Chicago, IL; and Rhona Hoffman, Chicago, IL. Her work has been written about in The New York Times, Wall Street International, and The Washington Post, amongst others.
